Wind

June-July-August-September-October-November-January-February-March-April-May

I have documented the direction, force, and optics of wind movement by recording it as a series of etchings. The power of this force can range from subtle and gentle to strong and destructive. I created these recordings in Long Beach, California. My interest in this project stems from the movement and settlement of micro-plastics that are carried by the wind, as well as the transport of organic matter and debris through the wind system across the globe.

As the wind blows across the surface of the lightly dusted plates, it pushes the rosin to shift and settle in patterns and marks. Each plate is left outside for one hour to be exposed to the elements, and then heated to preserve these marks, capturing that moment in time. The resulting images show the small pieces of dirt that have rolled and collected on the surface, leaves that have been blown down from the trees, and humidity in the air that causes the rosin to be slightly sticky. The subtle variations in each plate are often strange enough to resemble a night sky or markings on skin.

The documentation process will last for a full year, covering all 12 months and all four seasons. This duration was chosen in order to capture the full range of weather patterns and their influence on both the natural world and human habits and movements. By moving through a full calendar year with this documentation, we can complete a cycle and reflect on the changes that have occurred. This process transforms the act of recording into a more involved ritual.
